Philips Xwave-400u USB Speaker Driver This package contains an expiring beta-level driver which allows one to play standard PCM encoded sound files by piping the data to /dev/x400u0. Alteratively, one can include sound capability in one's own software by opening /dev/x400u0 and simply writing standard PCM encoded sound to it. In order to prevent bug-ridden beta versions from proliferating, this beta version will expire in April 2001. I have included two utility programs to aid in the use of this driver. The first utility is 'setpcm'. Setpcm allows a user to set the sound parameters, such as the number of channels, the sample resolution, and the sample frequency. The other utility is mp3std which directs mp3 music output to stdout. One can then pipe this into /dev/x400u0. Details of the procedure are included in the README_INSTALL.rtfd file, along with a sample file to use as a test. This driver does NOT incorperate the USB speaker system into the NeXT sound sub-system. It implements an entirely separate sound channel. If one would find it useful to have a USB sound system which is able to completely replace their sound card, send me an email note. Given sufficient demand, I would consider doing this. Details on installing and using this driver can be found in the README_INSTALL.rtfd file. Any problems, comments, or suggestions can be sent to me at my email address below.
