============================================================================ FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE For more information: Anacrusis Productions P.O. Box 3361 Costa Mesa, CA 92628 Voice/Fax (714) 641-8487 24hr E-mail: maurices@anacru.com NEW SERVICE: ANACRUSIS PRODUCTIONS EDUCATIONAL BUYER PROGRAM Costa Mesa, California--May 1 1993: Anacrusis Productions has officially started its "Education Buyer Program". The focus of this effort is to make manufacturers more receptive to establishing "special buy" programs in order to allow educators to easily upgrade to any new standard. In this way educators can always instruct or tutor students using state of the art technology. We offer administrative services to manufacturers in exchange for a commission on products to cover our operating costs. We also request a voluntary consulting fee seperate from the minimal product mark up and a yearly registration fee of ten dollars. Minimum orders will be for one thousand dollars or more and all P.O.'s are negotiable. Anacrusis Productions will secure and offer educational discount pricing based on either our low overhead or an agreement to administrate such a program from manufacturers or software developers. We will assist the educator by testing product, researching the validity of product specifications, monitoring reviews and criticisms of product, verifying complaints with manufacturers and developers, and comparing and contrasting similar product lines. We will distribute and update a semi annual newsletter that features current product educational pricing plus an assortment of books, software and services; as well as a line card outlining some of the manufacturers we have access to. If a manufacturer or software developer already has an educational discount program in place and we are unable to be involved with it we will notify our clients through our newsletter. Our first issue will be distributed May 1. It will feature the Ocean Vista 256 re-writeable 3.5" external (or internal) optical drive. We will also feature three internal high capacity hard drives, each with a five year warranty, from Digital's DSP series. Registered educators can either email our Internet address or call our 24hr support line to list their precise needs (include model numbers) and then check back within five working days to retrieve their custom quote or answer to a question. Return access ID numbers are the last four digits of the phone number left after initial contact. We will return calls personally if necessary. All consulting and pricing will be handled in a friendly informal manner so that our service may grow by reputation and recommendation with as little public advertising as possible. Prices will be quoted individually in addition to being listed in our newsletter. Some prices will not be quoted publicly due to agreements with manufacturers. There will be separate pricing for teachers, students (including support staff) and consumers. All are encouraged to copy, distribute and re-post this announcement freely (in its entirety), as well as provide referrals, constructive criticism, suggestions, and specific product requests to be considered for feature in our next newsletter. We will make every effort to satisfy all those involved, keep our overhead low and pass the savings onto you. TERMS: Cashiers check will get the most expedient attention while personal checks may take ten to fifteen days to clear. Purchase orders from educational institutions may be processed provided an agreement can be negotiated with the manufacturer. All clients are responsible for any taxes due for out of state orders (each state may differ) unless a national tax is activated. California tax will be charged for California residents. Educators will always have priority with regard to pricing, shipping and support. User groups are also encouraged to make purchases of ten or more units through their faculty sponsor at a student discount. The procedure could work as follows: User groups place an order for ten or more units under a single faculty ID number with one shipping address. Payment could be a single check or ten or more individual checks payable to Anacrusis Productions. Product would be shipped upon notification of funds received from our bank and faculty advisers would be notified of product shipping status. Those not affiliated with an educational institution but wish to purchase product can forgo the registration process and fee by mailing a cashiers check with their consumer priced order to the above U.S. mail address. Tenured professors, teachers, and adjunct faculty need only submit registration materials once and a processing fee once per year. Graduate students and staff need to file once and pay a registration fee for each order. Interested educators need to submit the following information plus a ten dollar per year registration fee for processing. All data will be entered into our data base to fulfill the different requirements of manufacturers that may wish to audit us. REGISTRATION INFORMATION A letter of intent on school or university stationary stating that all products purchased are to be used to further the education of students and not to be resold for one year after initial purchase, unless the resale is to another educator: Specific models and prices of product you wish to purchase: Suggestions for products or services you would like to see featured: A letter of credit--only applicable to P.O. orders (ie. five business references, banking information, etc.): Name: Address: Shipping address: Social security number or school I.D. number: A copy of a university picture I.D. or drivers license: Phone number: Work number: Internet Address: Facsimile number: Times of the day you can be contacted: WARRANTIES All products are new and sold with a warranty from the manufacturer or software developer with the exception of new demos which we may sell and provide a 30-day limited warranty with the same terms as the original manufacturer. All pricing is subject to change. We will strive to satisfy you or refund completely if any price should increase substantially or if product becomes unavailable, etc. Manufacturers and software developers interested in representation are encouraged to contact us. ================================================================= ================================================================= MAY 1, 1993 Summer-Fall Newsletter INTRODUCTION to ANACRUSIS EDUCATOR BUYER PROGRAM Hello, Many of you may remember me when we were putting together letters of interest to submit to MOST Inc. so that they could consider establishing an educator buying program from within their company. Well, we collected over one hundred and thirty letters of interest and submitted them along with a proposal and four or five meetings. As it turns out, MOST cannot sponsor a program on their own at this time, but they are still receptive to the idea and are encouraging us to continue dialogue after they start showing a profit with their 256 megabyte 3.5" read/write optical drive. MOST agreed that supporting the educational community would be a worthwhile effort but observed that the majority of people interested so far seemed to be students. In conclusion, we realized we needed to see more educators and educational institutions showing an interest before moving any further with a formal proposal. In light of this discussion Anacrusis Productions decided to sponsor its own Educator Buyer Program to serve as an intermediate vehicle to collect data and compile a portfolio of interested educators and institutions. Portions of the portfolio will be included in proposals submitted to targeted manufacturers for their consideration in implementing their own educator buy program. In addition, our data base will remain available should any manufacturer ever wish to audit us. This program will exist to offer product and support to the educational community as well as to promote adoption of educator discount programs to manufacturers. Since we are technically a value added reseller, our discounts cannot compete with manufacturers that already have an educational program in place. However, we will make every effort to either represent those companies in some administrative capacity or list those companies in our next newsletter. On the other hand, we will guarantee our prices for thirty days after an order is placed and refund any difference in publicly advertised price that can be verified. What that means is that we have to be able to go to a library or bookstore and see the product advertised in a periodical. Internet advertising does not count. Our educator buyer program will be guided by input from all of you plus our on call support staff. An important part of our service will be to expose educators to the current technologies available and assist them in making inteligent cost effective choices. We hope technology will be used to aid teachers in communicating more effectively and interactively to individual students of all levels of ability and ethnic background. Hopefully, educators will acquire product inexpensive enough to easily migrate to whatever new architextures approach. WHY HAVE AN EDUCATOR DISCOUNT PROGRAM? Over the past seven years we've noticed an increasing need for manufacturers to provide educational discounts, but unfortunately few are receptive because of the limited profit margin involved in sales of hardware. Apple and Hewlett Packard, as well as several software companies, offer educational discounts; however, manufacturers generally don't see a need for such a service especially regarding new products. FORTUNATELY, WE DO. Since we are a small company we hope to be adaptive enough to change and fulfill the needs of educators, providing them with a meaningful discount while still making a profit. Maintaining a profitable balance will be a difficult task so we are depending on the educational community, students, users, and manufacturers to support us, based of course on the quality of service we provide. Clients will be asked to remit a support fee for whatever they feel our services are worth and in exchange they will be retained on our voice mail list; otherwise, their voice account will be deleted thirty days after product is received. Even if clients send us one dollar, they will be supported via voice or e-mail. In this way we can be sure to use our support resources wisely. Students and faculty are increasingly in need of remedial course work or advice. Therefore, we want to make every effort to support them. Its not that computers are unavailable in our public schools. The problem seems to be that many people don't know how to properly evaluate and choose effective peripherals or software to enhance a students learning ability. Rather, they depend upon salesman or "consultants" that have little experience concerning the primary needs of educators and students. Instead of being used for up to date interactive tutorials, many computers are being used to teach students a word processing or database application that hasn't been upgraded since the original purchase of the machine. And although substantial funds are set aside for maintenance contracts, the task of upgrading systems inexpensively and choosing software is often left to the teacher who might not be adequately trained to follow through. Anacrusis Productions exists as a resource to help educators avoid unwise decisions regarding the purchase of computers, peripherals and software. We realize that one may not be computer literate or have the time to learn the specific vocabulary required to do the shopping necessary to make the most cost effective choices. Teachers and students must have modern resources to teach themselves if remedial work is necessary in any given subject area and we want to make any transition a smooth one. Our service to teachers is designed to locate, develop, provide and implement resources necessary to support a cohesive learning environment. Our services include: *First hand teaching experience *In depth industry and technical knowledge *Information research *Problem solving skills and experience *Product at a discount *Direct to disc recording and/or mastering of "Books on Tape" as well as full turnkey product packaging including audio and diskette duplication. Currently, we are focused upon products for Mac and Unix based systems but can acquire products for any platform. In the future, we plan to emphasize Multi-Media products and services to aid in remedial study of reading, writing, and arithmetic as well as "english as a second language", music ear training/sight singing, exercises in diction, etc. All of these are but a few areas that we plan to support in the future. HOW ARE WE GOING TO MAKE A PROFIT? Rather than making a forty percent or more profit, we plan to mark up merchandise to cover our expenses. Registered educators will get the best prices, registered students will pay a little more while others not associated with education will be offered best publicly advertised (hard copy after May 1) price minus fifty dollars (approximate). Oversees orders may require an additional twenty percent markup to cover tariffs etc. There are many things to understand with this type of pricing, the first of which is that profit margins for hardware are not very high unless purchased in volume and that no one wants to keep inventory because of the volatile computer market. Because of this there are national distributors and manufacturers. As we've already mentioned, keeping an inventory is taboo for most small businesses these days so instead they turn to national distributors. National distributors have extensive (out of date) catalogs and seem to get an additional eight to ten percent discount from manufacturers for purchasing in higher volumes. Its been our experience that these national distributors will tack on an additional ten percent (approximate) and resell product to value added resellers or retail stores who in turn must mark up to cover their overhead and profit margin. This percentage scheme fluctuates to encourage resellers to buy more product. "Buy two get one free" or "buy two get a better price" are common marketing techniques. In addition, national distributors make a whole other profit by providing a service called co-op marketing which means that they pool a bunch of manufacturers together who each pay a reduced price to participate in a full page ad in a national trade magazine often geared to resellers. If ten manufacturers pay half price for a full page add, the manufacturers save money while the distributor that puts it all together makes a four hundred percent profit. When we deal with national distributors, an ideal solution would be for us to back order product four weeks or until we get a minimum of ten or more orders, then order and ship UPS ground. All prices will be quoted individually because we have immediate access to virtually all manufacturers and product lines. Since there are many national distributors, we can always shop and go with the most inexpensive offering. The disadvantages are that products are sometimes unavailable and back ordered before we can back order them ourselves. This can take more time, but products do eventually ship and we always monitor progress. Manufacturers generally sell to original equipment manufacturers, national distributors, and retailers that can show consistent sales of product in quantity. We strive to make arrangements with the smaller, lesser known start up manufacturers and sister companies or subsidiaries of larger ones. These small companies are generally receptive to our efforts, while the larger ones refer us to franchised distributors. Also, dealing with larger companies tends to raise our overhead with long distance voice mail (press 1 to etc.), or constant referrals to other people who "may be able to help us". Often, a contact is made and an arrangement is made only to be later undone because of changes in personnel. Because of this, we will always solicit local manufacturers and manufacturers with an 800 number first. At any rate, dealing directly with manufacturers is sometimes cheaper and products almost always ship immediately. Furthermore, most featured products will be from efforts made directly with manufacturers. TERRITORY We can ship anywhere in the U.S. and although we plan to ship oversees and to Canada we are not fully aware of the procedures, tariffs, and laws necessary to do so. Some manufacturers won't allow us to ship and there seems to be problems with 64 bit architectures and national security. Still, if any of you know of a verifiable way to legally ship product, please feel free to contact us. One possible work around would be for us to ship to a U.S. shipping address (a relative) and have the receiving person forward the package to you. We will pursue this further as necessary. Currently, any Ocean product can be shipped worldwide plus shipping and twenty percent. WHAT IS OUR OVERHEAD? Aside from a substantial investment in hardware and software, most of our overhead comes from administration, long distance calls and faxes, and attendance at meetings, local trade shows, and seminars sponsored by various associations or corporations. We purchase evaluation units when we cannot acquire them as a courtesy and keep no stock that is not paid for in full. We also keep our manufacturing contacts in the Irvine- Santa Ana area and vicinity so that we can meet with sales representatives personally if necessary. We work with a dozen or so hardware and software partners who share the same ideals of a service driven, commission based company. Therefore, no one is on salary. Much research is done without charge and most of our support is done through a barter system. None the less, our resources are limited so we cannot afford to blindly send out literature and support those who "just want to stay current" while not placing an order. We hope that clients can remain receptive to this fact and maybe do a little homework with regard to understanding general computer vocabulary. Our main advantage in being small is that we are more receptive to change than bigger companies and all suggestions are considered or acted upon in a serious manner to promote customer satisfaction. WHERE DID OUR NAME COME FROM? Anacrusis Productions started out in 1986 as a production company that sought solo musical artists and produced them free of charge in exchange for representation. In 1990 Anacrusis Productions made a transition to becoming a NeXT developer with four partners. Our goal was to produce music theory, ear training and english tutorials ported to Hi-8 masters for copy to VHS tape. As you may know NeXT Inc. is currently experiencing a transition into a software company and in light of this, we've chosen to add service, support and product in addition to our other efforts which may be reinstated in a year or two. Consequently, there will be emphasis on specials offered that support multi-media and music as well as education. TERMS: Cashiers check will get the most expedient attention while personal checks may take seven to ten days to clear. Since we're new, credit card processing remains expensive and difficult. We would rather pass on the savings rather than pay the VISA processing fee. Purchase orders from educational institutions may be processed provided an agreement can me made with the manufacturer. The process could work as follows: User groups place an order for ten or more units under a single faculty ID number with one shipping address. Payment can be a single check or ten or more individual checks payable to Anacrusis Productions. Product would be shipped upon notification of funds received from our bank and faculty advisers would be notified of product shipping status. Those not affiliated with an educational institution but wish to purchase product can forgo the registration process and fee by mailing a cashiers, personal, or company check with their order to: Anacrusis Productions P.O. Graduate students and staff need to file once and pay a registration fee for each order. CONSULTANT FEES We ask the client to remit whatever amount they feel our service is worth and in exchange we will apply the fee as points (not credit) to continued access to our 24hr voice mail/fax support line. In this way we can actively support a voice mail base of 200 clients with a two to five business day turn around on answers to any questions concerning hardware problems or shipping information. Access codes will be the last four digits of the initial phone number left during the first message. We will delete client voice mail accounts approximately thirty days after receipt of shipped product and activate accounts in order of highest to lowest payment. This telephone line has been created for those without Internet access. Those with internet access are encouraged to contact us at maurices@anacru.com. There is no minimum support fee. This system may change if security problems arise. On the other hand, if one feels they are quite knowledgeable and simply want to buy products then the above is not necessary. All that need be done is to pay for and order product. The following information plus a registration fee ($10 for data entry and processing) is only necessary for educational pricing regardless of whether or not a consulting fee is paid. All other pricing does not require any preliminary information. REGISTRATION INFORMATION A letter of intent on school or university stationary (applicable for teacher pricing only) stating that all product purchased is to be used to further the education of students and will not be resold for one year after initial purchase, unless the resale is to another educator: Specific models and prices of product you wish to purchase: Suggestions for products or services you would like to see featured: A letter of credit--only applicable to P.O. orders (ie. five business references, banking information, etc.): Name: Address: Shipping address: Social security number or school I.D. number: A copy of a university picture I.D. or drivers license: Phone number: Work number: Internet Address: Facsimile number: Times of the day you can be contacted: WARRANTIES All products will be new and sold with warranty from the manufacturer or software developer. If a manufacturer or software developer already has an educational discount program in place and we are unable to be involved with it we will notify our clients through our newsletter. PAYMENT All transactions must be paid in full before an order can be processed. A cashiers check made to Anacrusis Productions would be most expedient and most other checks are acceptable provided the client understands that our bank places a ten working day hold upon them. Consequently, placement of an order would be delayed. P.O.'s are negotiable and subject to verification of a letter of credit. All of this information is subject to change but we will strive to inform clientele or refund completely if any price should increase substantially or if a product is unavailable for any reason. SERVICE All service will be initially conducted by fax, voice mail or email. If the problem is not resolved on the first or second attempt then a representative will contact you personally to work things out. One common criticism of technology has been that those who depend on it always live for "the tomorrow" while forgetting about "the now". Hopefully, we can synthesize an "in between" time that takes the best of both worlds so we may all benefit. As for those who live in "the past"? Well, you're welcome to participate in our program, provided you contribute as you feel necessary. All are encouraged to contribute articles, opinions of interest, needs, advice, etc. Hopefully, exposure to our developing technologies can force us to be more accountable to our jobs as teachers, students and human beings. See ya. maurices maurices@anacru.com (714) 641-8487 ================================================================= ================================================================ FEATURE PRODUCTS Our "Special Product Offering" is rather small this time but we will have more as soon as we get things going. As you will notice we have three prices and a retail price for each product. Feel free to call and be specific about your needs as we can acquire almost any computer or software peripheral. All reference book retail prices are rounded off to the nearest dollar and are not discounted unless ordered in quantity.
